Changing your username

Edit: It seems like it was a perfect timing. Few hours after posting it deviantART announced that it is now possible to change your username after every six months. You have to be a premium member for this but 3 months of premium membership will be cheaper than 1,000 points and you can do much more with premium membership. Do change you deviantART username you have to go to your settings and you will find this option from there with many helpful instructions. Have fun, not that I did anything!

This is my somewhat visual suggestion about changing your deviantART username but you might want to read this to get a bit better idea what I'm thinking.

First of all I'm not the first one to actually suggest it and there has been so much discussion about it in our community. I made a poll about it long time ago and I still get comments about this "issue" and I finally decided to make a little suggestion here.
In this description section I also hope to answer to most of your questions or the things people usually say when they hear about this.

Username change isn't a new thing, it has been actively used for years in many different communities and most of the times the time limit you have to wait between name changes and the amount of money you have to pay isn't that bad at all. Actually, most of the time it is free and you can often change it whenever you like or have to wait for 24 hours. But it seems like many deviantART users say that this can't be done because things would get out of control so easily and bad people could just do something stupid and change their name right after that. To that I say... Well it hasn't happen anywhere else and if it has then it hasn't been that bad.

This is also one of the reason I suggest that we would have to pay for this service and 1,000 points is enough for you to think about it twice before you do it. First of all "bad guys" wouldn't spend 1,000 points to change their name because often they don't have anything to lose. They can just create another account like they do now but for some reason people don't complain about that.
However if you really have something to lose like stats about your success or time you have spent here, or even all the artwork you have here with comments and favorites then to you this 1,000 points are all worth it.

I have also added a time limit of six months for every time you can change your username because I think that it would be enough. It would be strange to change your name more than that. Six months is enough for you to make up your mind and know who you want to be.

The biggest problem that I have with this idea is that people might not know who you are after that. They might just not know about your new name. For that I have managed to come up with only one idea. Your old username will be saved to somewhere in your profile. Maybe to recent activity tab where you can see when you joined with deviantART or maybe to your "About Me" tab. But still I feel that it isn't enough to throw away this idea. People will know who you are one way or another.

There is also another problem that I see right now, our profile url's. As soon as you change your name then all the old url's from your profile have to be changed as well. I don't know much about this issue so no suggestions from me.

Ok, this is just a small suggestion right now and I guess I will update it whenever I have a new idea about things.
