I didn't like "The Hunger Games"

Wed Apr 4, 2012, 3:14 AM
First of all before I start I would like to thank you all for an amazing support I have had recently. I don't know why but my tutorials have been really popular, receiving close to 500 favorites with one week. Also huge number of watchers as well.

Anyway, I was away for a week to visit my grandparents and to help them out but before that I had a chance to see "The Hunger Games". You don't even believe how much I wanted to see it as I had read the first book few months before. So as soon as I had a chance I decided to watch it.

I know that there have been many reviews about it lately but I haven't had a chance to read them, so I don't know what others think about it but here is my short opinion - I didn't like it.

I don't know why but there were so many things that I just didn't like. Maybe it is because I would have liked to see it a bit closer to the actual book or I don't know. I know that it was a long movie, over 2 hours, but I still feel like they left out so many important things and had so many useless things in it. If you haven't seen the movie yet or you haven't read the books then this text might now contain some spoilers.

First of all I didn't want to say anything about the movie before I hadn't read the second book. Fortunately I have all 3 books by now and I took two evening to start and finish the second book. I thought that maybe there's something I don't know about. That there's something that might change my opinion, unfortunately there wasn't. So there's two main problems about this movie and why I didn't like it.

1) Relationship between Peeta, Gale and Katniss. I feel like they could have done a better job with it. If you had the chance to see the movie without reading a book then it might feel like there's a real relationship between Peeta and Katniss, that they both love eachother. But it wasn't like that, at least not in the first book. They definitely had some moments but at the end at that time it wasn't a real love. At least not from Katniss. There was a little hint about the feelings at the end of the movie but again, if you've only seen the movie then I don't know if you got it.

2) Mockingjay pin. In the movie it was randomly given to her by someone in the hob and she then gave it to her sister at first. They changed this part completely. This pin is a very important symbol at the end so I don't see the point why they had to change it.

There were also some other parts I didn't like, for example some of the actors but, at the end it wasn't a bad movie. There were some parts I really liked, I just thought about the book at the same time and it ruined some parts for me.

And as I said before, I also read the second book, I haven't had time to read the third one but I will do it soon. Second book, in my opinion, was way better than the first one.

So that's it for now, time to go outside. Sun is shining, again... :hooray:

I thought they did a good job translating the book to the movie...I'm sure we can agree there have been much worse movie renditions of successful books. I see what you mean with your two points (especially the mockingjay pin - I can't understand why they would do that), but all in all I felt very happy with the movie. ^.^

Yeah don't get me wring, it isn't a bad movie, I just feel that some places could have been better. I think that they did this version of mockingjay pin because it would have taken too long to introduce another character and the movie itself was pretty long already. So maybe they just wanted to save time. However, I don't know how they go on from there because mockingjay pin is a really important symbol.

I see what you mean~ it must have been for length/budget reasons ^.^ There were definitely parts that could have been better (I was extremely disappointed with the muttations - that was probably the biggest let down for me). Nonetheless, I look forward to next movies of the books :D

I haven't even read the book and i thought the movie wasn't that good. The dialogue and plot were pretty shallow. it was pretty predictable. And I didn't understand the whole futuristic spaceships and buildings vs some old 1900s mining town. And the people in the capital were all futuristic hipsters which was really distracting.

Well yeah, that's why this book is really important. Basically, Capitol is this rich futuristic city with strange styles and invention. At the same time there's 12 districts with old buildings and no food and other things that are important for staying alive. All these 12 districts provide resources for Capitol so people over there could live happily. Basically all these districts are Capitol slaves. It makes much more sense after reading the book.

The book itself is really good, all 3 books, but they didn't do that good of a job with this movie. :)

I felt that the movie wasn't as good as the book, but it was better than I expected. My biggest problem was exactly what you described -- the relationships between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale just weren't portrayed as they should have been. I definitely wanted to see more Gale, and not just when Katniss kissed Peeta and panned to Gale being sad, heh. I feel like people who read the book wouldn't have understood that Katniss and Peeta were acting most of the time. It was a little deceptive.

I have to say, I loved Rue. I think the actress who portrayed her did a great job. I didn't want to get too attached, though, because I knew her fate.

Yeah, as much as I have heard then people who didn't read the book were a bit confused. There's a huge story behind all of this but it wasn't explained in this movie. They tried to explain some of the things in the movie but it wasn't enough. :)

I agree, Rue was awesome. :aww:

Very true! I talked to my friend this weekend who saw it without reading the book and she was disappointed as well. I'm curious to see how they'll do the next movie, since the mayor's daughter wasn't referenced at all in this movie and she plays a somewhat big role in the second book.

My guess is that they won't show her at all and what was going on there. Maybe only a bit where she was in mayor's office, other than that they will most probably skip over like many parts from the first book.
