Too much freedom isn't good?

Journal Entry: Wed Nov 9, 2011, 3:00 AM
Another rant from me, this time about deviantART.

I don't know how about you guys but I sometimes feel that some things should be limited here and I'm talking about user profile and journal.

Its awesome to have quite a lot of freedom to do whatever you want with your userpage but some deviants go too far with it.

I often visit deviants userpages and often I find myself in a middle of emoticons and gif images. I know that its awesome to have the opportunity to share these things with others and most of these pictures are awesome, but... at the same time it isn't cool anymore if you have like 100 emoticons or gif images in one journal or all around your profile. Let me tell you why I think it isn't awesome.

Examples:

1. You have some awesome artwork in your gallery and I'm someone who would like to see more. So I come to your profile to see some of your work. Lets say that I have a slow computer or connection. I come to your profile and suddenly my browser freezes because there are just too many pictures.

2. Again, I found your artwork interesting and I have decided to visit your profile. I open your profile and I see 100 gifs and emoticons. My first reaction of your profile might be the one where I decide if I will follow you or not. In this case after seeing your profile I close this tab fast and go on.

3. Time is important to all of us. We want to find information fast and we don't like to waste our time. By spamming your own profile with gifs and emoticons you make it harder for us to find stuff we would like to see.

I'm not saying that my opinion is the right one but it is my opinion and I'm quite sure that there are many others like me. If you want to find people who would follow your artwork then put more time into your art and don't worry about your profile. Sometimes simple things are the best. Think about how it would be for others to visit your profile. You might now the way around your profile because you are the one who created it, but for many others it might be too confusing to stay. Keep it simple and keep it cool. Try to give your watchers a good user experience.

What do you think about it? Is it important or not?

I'm just curious, but do you have an opinion on plain profile? (I don't know why I would ask that, everyone has rights to do what they want with their profile <_<)

Both empty and totally full of stuff profiles are imo not really beautiful to watch. :)
I understand and I agree with you that people have rights to do what they want with their profile. But at the same time it might cost them some valuable watchers. ;)

Yeah, too much freedom can be bad... any extreme is bad, no?

I don't visit many people's pages, so I can't relate, but I understand.

It's their loss, really.

Conversely, I think I am the opposite there...

I usually don't look at other people pages that much as well but time to time when I see someones awesome comment or artwork, then I just want to see what they are like. :)

Freedom isn't bad until you know what to do with it. Sometimes some people just go too far with it. :aww:

Yeah, that's understandable.

True... or they don't go far enough, which makes me question which is worse. =/

I'm not fond of people cramming tons of stamps and emotes onto a page. However, in certain scenarios I see people doing the same things on a profile, like it's a popular trend. I don't know, I used to have my page all css'ed out eight months ago... but I changed it because a lot of people started to do the same.

To be honest then most of the times css'ed pages aren't the best looking ones. I don't remember how yours looked, maybe it was awesome. :)

I used to have more stuff on my profile page but after seeing some more crowded pages (usually with excessive amounts of thumbs) and saw some discussion on how it could slow down someone's browser I started thinking. I don't think my page was ever horrendously overcrowded but I'd rather not be more excessive than I feel I need to be. I may or may not have too many widgets right now, but I keep them all closer to the bottom of the page so art is visible before the extras.

I think there have been cases where a customized profile page has driven me away, and I wouldn't be surprised if part of my problem with some of those pages was overcrowding of images. I know horribly clashing colors in boxes or journals make me leave without a second thought in most cases. :stare:
